Reviews

"After following the book's Culp's Hill course on a balmy Saturday morning in May, I'm sold that there may be no better way to tour the battlefield than on two wheels. The opportunity to cruise past the landscape's open fields, rocky hills, and woodlots, while easily hopping on and off bike for frequent stops to read monuments or signage or to snap photographs, is incomparable." ~ Civil War Times

"Bicycling Gettysburg is comprehensible to readers and riders of all ages and expertise... concise and readable for both aficionados and novices alike." ~ Civil War Monitor

"The best ways to truly see a battlefield are by walking and biking. And biking a battlefield such as Gettysburg provides a rush like no other. Sue has produced a valuable book about how to ride that most hallowed Civil War ground. A definite keeper." ~ John Banks, journalist, blogger, author

"Three days in July 1863 changed America. Whether you are an experienced cyclist or just starting out, a serious historian or history buff, you will want to visit Gettysburg more than once. Make sure you take this guide along." ~ Ken Rich, Gettysburg history buff

"Quite fascinating, Bicycling Gettysburg National Military Park is a great, easy to read book for history buffs and rookie history learners alike. It is a pictorial book that also has detailed information about the Battle of Gettysburg. I am excited to use the maps and images on my next visit to Gettysburg." ~ SPC Kevin Kozlowski, U.S. Army veteran

"Very informative!! Loads of maps and photos, so much information, just read it slowly and take it in or will be over whelming . Great book whether you're biking or touring the battlefield any other way." ~ Verified Amazon Customer Review

Route 1b: Full Day Short Loop. Pick this route if you do not have time for Route 1's longer (23.8-mile) ride, but definately want to tour portions of the Gettysburg battlefield for all three days of fighting. If coverage for battle Day 1 is not essential, Route 3b covers about the same distance (10.7 miles) without the downtown ride on busy Washington Street.

  • 11.5 miles, Full Day Short Loop, Gettysburg, July 1-3, 1863
  • 3-4 hour self-directed tour: East Cemetery Hill, McPherson's Ridge, Seminary Ridge, The Peach Orchard, Little Round Top, and Cemetery Ridge
  • Digital download in PDF format (link delivered to you via email)
  • 22 full-color pages (maps and photos) that you can print for personal use
  • Detailed bicycle cues that describe turns and mileage for a circular route
  • GPS coordinates for featured monuments
  • Maps mark location of restrooms, portable toilets, water sources, bicycle racks, parking lots

Route 1b: Full Day Short Loop provides abbreviated coverage of key battlefield sites for all three days of the Battle of Gettysburg (July 1-3, 1863). It is a shorter version of Route 1, the Full Day Loop, omitting the northern and southern most ends of the battlefield. An optional companion map to the guidebook, Bicycling Gettysburg National Military Park, this 22-page PDF file provides maps, bicycle cues, and monument photographs for an 11.5-mile tour of Gettysburg National Military Park. The maps refer to historical content in the guidebook, so having both is ideal.

Route 2: Battle Day 1 Loop. Pick this route if you have a special interest in Gettysburg battlefield events for July 1, 1863. (More than other bicycle routes, this one cannot avoid town roads, although the route was designed to allow bicyclists the option to ride on wide shoulders or sidewalks.)

  • 10.5 miles, Battle Day 1 Loop, Gettysburg, July 1, 1863

Route 2: Battle Day 1 Loop covers the fields north of town and also part of Culp's Hill southeast of town, which is the first half of Route 1 (Full Day Loop). This means that it is not strictly necessary to own the companion maps for both Route 1 and Route 2. On the other hand, you may enjoy that they include a different set of monument photographs. An optional companion map to the guidebook, Bicycling Gettysburg National Military Park, this 15-page PDF file provides maps, bicycle cues, and monument photographs for a 10.5-mile tour of Gettysburg National Military Park. The maps refer to historical content in the guidebook, so having both is ideal.
